The Upanishads are late Vedic Sanskrit texts that supplied the basis of later Hindu philosophy. They deal with meditation, philosophy, consciousness, and ontological knowledge. While among the most important literature in the history of Indian religions and culture, the Upanishads document a wide variety of "rites, incarnations, and esoteric knowledge" departing from Vedic ritualism and interpreted in various ways in the later commentarial traditions. Of all Vedic literature, the Upanishads alone are widely known, and their diverse ideas, interpreted in various ways, informed the later traditions of Hinduism.
Tuesday Night Great Books is a discussion of the world’s sacred and philosophical texts. Led by Rev. Bob, we’ll explore a few short passages from some of the world’s best-known sacred texts. No advance reading is required. No prior knowledge is assumed; we will just read the text aloud and talk about it. Skepticism and scrutiny are welcome. We’ll look at the texts rationally, emotionally, spiritually, theologically and from the standpoint of literature.
These sessions will be held monthly, on the LAST MONDAY of the Month, 7:30-9pm on Zoom.
